A Change in WiFi Service at Sea Tac Airport

by Teresa Valdez Klein on February 10, 2006

At Sea-Tac, it used to be that you could get a WiFi connection with T-Mobile for $6.00 for the first hour and 10 cents a minute after that. Since I rarely spend more than 2 hours at the airport - and usually only a half hour to an hour of this time is spent on the Web - this was a good option for me.

Now, it costs $9.99 for 24 hours of straight access with Cingular. This is absurd because no sane person spends 24 hours in an airport without a massive delay. I’m paying $4.00 more for unlimited Internet access whose unlimitedness serves no useful purpose to me, and I don’t like it.

Whoever got rid of the T-Mobile pay-as-you-go service ought to bring it back, stat! The more choices, the better.

Wayport has wifi service at Sea Tac. Depending on your level of usage you even have a choice between [no contract] pre-paid connection cards or monthly memberships. Another alternative is getting an EVDO card and monthly service from your mobile carrier.

WiFi in airports should be free just like cable TV is. In fact, they could pop a window at me with an ad or something or add 50 cents to the port fee for every passenger to pay for it. I use my cellphone as a modem to connect and work offline.

Remember that if you are going to be in SeaTac for more than a few hours that the Alaska Airlines “Boardroom” club does day passes for $20 and it includes all of the following for free: wifi, vodka drinks (yes free!), nice chairs, fresh fruit, TV, esspresso, bagles, crackers, cheese….

Any layover longer than 2 hours and it pays for itself in wifi and booze! :-)

Will they let you in at the Alaska Airlines Boardroom club if you are not flying Alaska?

Brian: Thanks for the tip. I’ll be sure to make that happen the next time I fly through SeaTac.

Ulla:I can’t imagine that it would make a difference, since you’re paying your $20 either way. The only problem is that you’d have to go to the Alaska terminal instead of your own and risk missing your flight because you were so enjoying the wifi and booze.
