Flight security: is the price worth it for safe travel?
When I fly, I usually show up to the airport REALLY early, so that I can get through security at whatever pace the line is moving on that particular day, and then spend the bulk of my time (hopefully) working at the gate. But I know a lot of people who are far less zen about their travel.
I was reading this piece in the New York Times about, roughly, how safe air travel really is.
The price of that safety is of course a combination of regulations (which have apparently been slack, lately) and travel security. I’m curious, as frequent business travelers, do you feel safer flying than you do traveling by other means? Do you think it’s worth the hassle of security?

I feel safer when I fly compared to other means of travel. But it’s not because of the security checkpoints and the TSA’s war on water. It is because of the multiple redundant systems built in the airplanes, the training of pilots, and the odds of a death in a plane compared to other means of travel.
The combination of long waits for security, which I feel is necessary, flight delays, high ticket prices because of fuel, i can see a time where it would make sense for companies to finally catch on to video conferencing and do away with most travel. Result will affect airlines, hotels, restaurants, etc., but that combined with extremely difficult problems involving visa’s for foreigners wanting to visit the USA, we are in a situation that has no easy solution. I am afraid many of our US government led policies are coming back to bite us in the ass big time. I think the word normal as we knew it before is gone forever. Normal now is a totally different scenario. Who to blame? Unfortunately, we have to blame ourselves. We elected the people who govern us and they’ve done a poor job.
if I have a choice, like going from Washington to New York, I much prefer the train. You don’t spend such a long time waiting, the seats are roomier, and you can get up and walk around.
No one ever said that the TSA offers “security.”
Security isn’t the same for everyone take water, I cannot carry it pass security but flight crew and employee can carry large bottle right by security. What are they thinking? If it is something that we can not carry pass security then it is important enough that no one should be able to carry water by security. TSA security is no better than what we had before 9/11. It is still do something to make the public think they are safe security.
J Benson has good point. Security is NO better before 9/11. I don’t care about security itself. I have known for long time; cockpit door needs to be much stronger than it was designed to be. Anyone can kick door easily and FAA is solely responsibility for not enforcing commercial planes to improve cockpit door’s design of security. FAA is famous for talk without any talk. NTSB has wrote tons of recommendation but FAA says, put in inbox and we’ll look over it later.
Don’t people love to visit airports? Don’t people like to greet people when passengers get off the plane and hugging and kiss? Don’t parents can say bye to their children at gate without explaining to TSA? I love old days! Thanks a bunch, Obama Bin Laden. His visionary shall FAIL!
