How does the 3G iPhone fit your business travel?

by Jason on June 10, 2008

Apple’s announcement of the upcoming 3G iPhone (to be on sale July 11th) has me wondering: will Apple be able to take a bite out of the business market.

The new iPhone firmware is clearly aimed at co-opting a big chunk of the BlackBerry user base, with full ActiveSync and enterprise support that integrates with both Microsoft and Apple programs on Macs and PCs.

Essentially, Apple wants you to ditch the Blackberry and start carrying their phone instead.

I use an iPhone instead of a a blackberry or a Windows Mobile smartphone because of the web browsing. Most of the e-mail I send on my phone is short - the longer responses can usually wait until I’m back at my laptop and I can spit out a full response on a regular keyboard. And the iPhone is great for reading e-mail and checking out attachments.

But I know I’m in the minority here.

So here’s my question to you Blackberry touting road warriors - will faster network speed and full enterprise integration cause you to jump ship? Or are you sticking around for the keyboard?

There is a lot to like about the iPhone, especially with the new updates. However, Blackberry does such a good job on email, Apple will need to either come up with a very similar system or allow an add-in program from Blackberry to run on the iPhone. I really hate to carry two devices, so right now I mostly carry a Blackberry 8800. I also have an old Treo 650 that I carry for some of the programs loaded, especially eReader. I read most of my books using eReader. What is up with Palm? Are they going to try and compete with iPhone / Blackberry or are they going down-market ala Centro?

YES!!!!! Can’t wait to get the new 3G iPhone. I waited for the second generation iPhone to appear and from what I have read and seen it will be worth the wait. Good-bye Treo and hello iPhone.

Well, I’m not a Blackberry touting road warrior, although I am a road warrior and have considered getting a Blackberry for some time. So, I don’t think I really qualify to answer your question. But the real reason I hadn’t gotten a Blackberry in the first place is that I’ve been holding out for the perfect smartphone with full internet access and ability to play and manipulate office files. And, on top of that, I just didn’t like the idea of holding the brick to my head for a phone call, yes, I know about bluetooth headsets, but if the headset is out of power, well, I certainly still have to hold the brick to my head.

Now with the new iPhone 3G, it looks like the features I like have been made a possibility, so I may actually breakdown and get used to holding a brick to my head.
