Wireless Industry Agrees to Standardize on Phone Chargers!

by Steve Broback on February 17, 2009

Say hallelujah. The Wall Street Journal reports that a consortium of 17 handset makers and cellular operators have agreed to agree on a standard charger for all member phones. Apparently, discarded chargers currently create more than 51,000 tons of waste a year.

Expect deliverance from charger hell by 2012.

My bet is that Apple won’t participate…they would give up the Apple tax on periferals that work on iPhones…

I’ll bet this means that they’ll standardize on some “cell phone” standard instead of using the mini usb plug that my last two phones have had.

The mini usb is great because I can use it for serial/network communications, plus charge my phone.
